Types of Games
Limit/No limit Ring Games
These are up to 10 players around a single table. The games
range from playing for free with play money, to playing for
over $100. Limit and No Limit varies slightly as Limit you
are playing for example $2-$4 per hand where NL you buy into
a predetermined level e.g. $50. In both, the small and large
blinds will stay the same though out. You can add the money
in your account (re-buy) or leave the table and keep the money
you have at anytime after the completion of the hand in play.
Multi Table Tournaments
The structure of the tournaments for Limit and No limit are
similar. You buy into the tournament for a predetermined fee,
anything from $1 to over $100. There will be a prize structure
which will depend on the size of the tournament and the type
of tournament. The winner will get a percentage of the total
entrance money and the prizes cascade downwards. It is a good
way to get a very high return for a small stake. In both,
the small and large blinds increase as the tournament progresses.
In the later stages of the tournament an Ante is also introduced
to increase the size of the pots. Both the Blinds and Antes
are used to encourage betting. Be warned, although these offer
big returns, set aside a large amount of time as they can
take several hours to complete.
Sit and Go Tournaments
The most common type of sit and go tournaments are on a single
table, although you can play 2 or 3 table tournaments as well.
You buy in for a specific amount, anywhere between $5 and
$200. The prizes are split between the top three, with the
winner taking 50 % of the prize fund. For example on a $10
tournament the winner will take $50, second place will take
$30 and third place will take $20. The blinds go up as the
tournament continues. These are a good way to play tournament
poker as the generally take 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete.
1 on 1
This is possibly the most exciting form of poker where you
are just playing one opponent. The action tends to be very
fast and very loose. The structure differs slightly between
Limit and No limit games. The blinds for Limit, tends to be
for either: $3/$6, $5/$10, $10/$20. The blinds will remain
the same throughout the game and you can add money to your
account if you run out. This game is not for the faint hearted
as even the $3/$6 blinds will often lead to pots of over $70.
It is very easy to make or lose over $150 at the lowest level
in less than half an hour. No Limit games you will buy in
for a set price, from $5 to $200. The structure is then the
same as the sit and go tournaments, but the winner takes all.
The No limit games are a good way of practicing tournament
“Heads Up” play with little financial risk.
There are many other types of tournament structures including
satellites and step tournaments. The best way to experience
these is to start playing and see what type suits you best.
